Social workers are faced with supporting caregivers of adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease through a long and complex grief process. Through a didactic discussion of clinical experience and current research, this presentation will discuss the grief needs for caregivers through their disease experience, offer strategies and interventions to support the psychosocial needs, and assist in making meaning of care transitions, including beginning/ending hospice and palliative care.

Learning Objectives:
1) Attendees will be able to describe the grief process for caregivers of adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
2) Attendees will be able to describe specific practice interventions related to supporting caregivers of people with dementia and be able to formulate appropriate treatment plan to support the grief process.
3) Attendees will be able to identify the unique characteristics of the care transitions caregivers face, including live discharge from hospice.

Presenter: Stephanie P. Wladkowski, PhD, LICSW, ACHP-SW is an Assistant Professor at Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Wladkoswki’s clinical background is in hospice and palliative care, supporting caregivers, and grief and bereavement. Her interests are in advancing the social work profession, promoting end of life care, and research that informs clinical practice.

This course was originally held in April 2015. 


Once registering and paying for the course you will get access to view the webinar (through a downloadable pdf file), as well as receive a link to complete the post test. Attendees need to answer 80% of the content questions correctly in order to receive credit for the course. All continuing education certificates will be emailed within 30 days of completion of the post test.

Continuing Education: 1 CE is available for social workers. $19 for NASW members, $29 for non-members.


NASW-Michigan is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative, Provider Number MICEC-0017. This program is approved for 1.0 social work continuing education clock hour. Social workers (under the new General Rules) can earn up to half (22.5) of the required 45 hours of continuing education through alternative learning methods, such as this webinar.
