Relapse prevention is a concept widely accepted in recovery communities and treatment centers. Many health care professional recovery programs require actions that are “relapse prevention” measures, including meeting attendance and aftercare planning. Despite its importance, many programs view relapse prevention as a piece of treatment/recovery rather than a concept that should be incorporated as a foundation for treatment/recovery. This presentation was developed initially for a lawyers’ professional recovery program and includes three parts. Part one helps us understand the existing models of relapse and relapse prevention, including cognitive behavioral, stages of change, 12-step and dynamic. Part two then discusses the overall perspective of these models and suggests how a recovery oriented system of care based upon relapse prevention would help to promote the best care practices for health care professionals and their ongoing recovery. Part three will then use the ROSC model to provide practical techniques and strategies to use throughout the treatment and recovery process to help health care professionals avoid relapse. These practical techniques and strategies will be based upon the models identified in part one, research by Marlatt, research by Gorski, 12-step programs, and professional experience.

Learning Objectives:
1) Learn and understand different models of relapse prevention theory
2) Learn practical techniques and strategies for relapse prevention
3) Understand relapse prevention as a treatment model and a recovery-oriented system of care
