The state of Michigan requires newly-graduated BSW and MSW students to be supervised by a licensed professional, yet very little training for this position is given. This presentation, part of NASW-MI's Supervision Certification training program curriculum, outlines 5 ethical concerns beginning and more experienced supervisors are likely to encounter in their work with licensure supervisees. Using case studies, research, and personal experiences, the presenter will expose the practice challenges related to these ethical traps. Risk management strategies, including the creation of a supervision contract and supervision documentation, will be shared.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will learn the recommended and required qualifications of social workers who supervise individuals seeking licensure.
2. Participants will gain knowledge of 5 ethical traps supervisors tend to fall into in their work with supervisees.
3. Participants will identify 3 risk management strategies designed to address potential supervision ethical traps.
Presenter: Mark Giesler, PhD, LMSW, is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Saginaw Valley State University, where he teaches ethics, practice, and research to undergraduates. Dr. Giesler has researched and presented on topics related to gender and sexuality as pertains to professional practice.
