Description

While social workers are often well-prepared to offer mental health, physical health and basic needs assistance, the comorbidity of financial instability is often unaddressed. The one hour workshop will cover frequent questions and concerns of clients across the service spectrum. For those clients trying to start healthy financial habits, or recover from a crisis, budgeting and credit are critical. For populations with vulnerabilities such as age, language barriers, and legal status, learning to avoid scams and understand the basic inner workings of our system are critical. In a nutshell, the goal is to offer Personal Finance 101 for Social Workers for professional and personal application.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Introduce direct service workers, including those in private practice and in larger community based organizations to the financial services sector.
  2. Provide tangible, actionable knowledge and resources for helping clients navigate their own financial strategies.
  3. Teach basic skills around budgeting, building credit, and avoiding scams for both client and personal use.

Presenter: Gabrielle D'Angelo, MSW. A Detroit native, Gabrielle graduated with both undergraduate BA and graduate MSW degrees from University of Michigan. Since, she has worked in a variety of social work settings, including direct service, research and policy before making a career change into financial services. She is now using her interpersonal and management education as a financial advisor helping families, businesses, and organizations improve their financial well-being.
